The Gateway Bridge was officially opened on this day 30 years ago in Brisbane, in the Australian state of Queensland.

Brisbane’s iconic Gateway Bridge and its new counterpart have since been renamed ‘The Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges’ in honour of a man integral to their creation.

Annually since 1997 half the bridge is closed to traffic to accommodate over 20,000 runners in the ‘Bridge to Brisbane’ charity fun run.
